If you live in a UK flat, maisonette, or older conversion, you might wonder whether your kitchen can handle a full-size electric cooker — or whether you’re limited to a 13A plug-in solution. The answer depends on one question: do you have a 32-amp cooker circuit? Here’s how to check, step by step.

Standard 13A sockets safely supply up to 3,000 watts — fine for a kettle, microwave, or toaster, but nowhere near enough for a full-size electric cooker or induction hob. What Happens If You Use a Full-Size Cooker Without a Proper Circuit?

  • Instant tripping — The MCB or RCD trips as soon as the hob is turned on. This is the best-case outcome because it means the safety devices are working properly.
  • Overheating cables — If the breaker doesn’t trip immediately (for example, because someone has swapped in a higher-rated breaker without upgrading the cable), the undersized cable heats up. Over time, the insulation melts, exposing live conductors. This is a serious fire risk.
  • Melting sockets — A 13A plug or socket is not designed to handle 32A loads continuously. The contacts can overheat, the plastic casing can melt, and arcing can occur inside the socket.
  • Invalidated insurance — If your home insurance provider finds that a fire was caused by an incorrectly installed cooker on an undersized circuit, your claim could be denied.

This is not a DIY job. Installing a new cooker circuit requires Part P notification, correct cable sizing, proper earth bonding, a 45A double-pole isolator, and consumer unit work that only a qualified electrician should perform.

No Cooker Circuit? Here Are Your Options

If your kitchen lacks a dedicated 32A cooker circuit, you have two options:

Option 1: Have a New Circuit Installed

Call a qualified electrician registered with a Competent Person Scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT, STROMA, or ELECSA). A new cooker circuit typically costs £300–£600, depending on the distance from the consumer unit, accessibility of cable routes, and whether your consumer unit has space for a new breaker.
